Sova Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley Appropriate Adults

At the Sova South Yorkshire Appropriate Adult Scheme we recruit, train, support and supervise volunteer Appropriate Adults (AA) to support children and young people (aged 10-17 inclusive) and vulnerable adults detained in police custody.

The role of the AA is to look after the best interests of the suspect, ensuring they know and understand their rights and that the police interview and any other police procedures go as smoothly as possible. The volunteers are there for young people and vulnerable adults, for example those with mental health problems or learning difficulties, who don’t have anyone else willing or able to be there for them.  Having a trusted, independent person available for support at such a difficult time can make a huge difference to a young person or adult in need.  The Scheme operates a 24 hours service and volunteers are on-call for a 4hr ‘shift’ each week at the times they choose.

The Scheme is funded by the Youth Justice Services of Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley.
We are now recruiting volunteers who are willing and able to travel to any of the 5 custody suites in the service area within one hour of receiving a request from South Yorkshire Police.
